Number of persons killed in traffic accidents continues to decrease in September 2008

According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 392 persons were killed in road traffic accidents in Germany in September 2008. That was a decrease by 8.2% compared with September of the previous year. The number of persons injured was down by 4.0% to 36,700 in the same period.
First three quarters of 2008: federation records financial deficit, Länder achieve surplus

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) according to preliminary results of financial cash statistics, the expenditure of the Federation amounted to EUR 233.9 billion during the first three quarters of 2008. Compared to the first three quarters of 2007, the expenditure was up 4.9%. The revenue recorded by the Federation climbed 4.7% to EUR 209.1 billion. As a result of the difference between revenue and expenditure, the Federation recorded a financial deficit of EUR 24.8 billion (as defined by public finance statistics). This was an increase of EUR 1.7 billion on the first three quarters of 2007.
Federal Statistical Office grants 2008 Gerhard Fürst Award

This year, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has granted the Gerhard Fürst Award for outstanding scientific projects for the tenth time. Together with other activities, the Gerhard Fürst Award has contributed to an intensified co-operation between the Federal Statistical Office and the scientific and research community during the last ten years and to supporting any efforts to deal with issues of official statistics within the scope of higher education.
You will find a new section now: Indicators. The short-term indicators have replaced the section “economic indicators” and offer the usual tables and charts in a new form and with a new navigation. You will also find further links to other indicator systems. As another new feature we present the Business Cycle Monitor which you may use as an interactive tool to research the economic cycle and the factors influencing it.
Indicator report on sustainable development for Germany released in 2008
The 2002 national strategy for sustainable development of the Federal Government has made sustainability a fundamental principle of Germany's policy. To measure the effectiveness of the strategy, a set of sustainability indicators was specified for several thematic fields at the political level. Furthermore, both target values and years were assigned to the majority of these indicators. At two-year intervals, the indicator trends have been reflected and analysed in an indicator report (only in German), released by the Federal Statistical Office.

On 1 January 2007, the former child-rearing benefit was replaced by parental allowance, which parents receive as a family policy benefit when a child is born.
